Woman gets arrested, charged for bomb joke at airport

A 27-year-old woman was arrested and charged after she uttered a bomb joke while checking in at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

Nancy Ebata, who lives in Caloocan City, was bound for Japan last Tuesday, June 7, when the incident happened, according to a news article published on Inquirer.net.

A report from the Aviation Security Unit National Capital Region (Avseu-NCR) said Ebata checked in for her flight to Haneda at a Philippine Airlines counter in NAIA Terminal 2.

Before putting her baggage on the conveyor, she presented her travel documents to customer service agent Leonardo Mendina Jr., who asked if there was anything fragile in her bag.

Ebata replied:

“Just my friend’s trinkets. There’s also a bomb! Joke, joke, joke!”

She was immediately informed by Mendina that making bomb jokes inside the airport is against the law. The latter reported the incident to his manager.

Ebata was charged at the Department of Justice for violating Presidential Decree 1727 or the Anti-Bomb Joke Law.

If proven guilty, she could be jailed for five-years and fined P40,000 for saying a bomb joke inside the airport.
