Four girls died and 22 other members of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) were injured after the elf truck ferrying them turned upside down.

The fatalities, all minors, were identified as Reah Jane Domincillio, 10 years old; Danna Jane Saren, also 10; Rachelle Manulat, 12; and Steffani Ann Baltonado, 9.

Those who suffered injuries were brought to the Davao Oriental Medical Center in Mati City while one Mark Gil Ian Garnace was brought to the Davao Regional Hospital in Tagum City in critical condition.

The victims came from Barangay Araybo in Pantukan, Compostela Valley, and were on their way to Mati Sports Complex to attend a sporting event organized by the religious group when the vehicle with license plate number LEA 551 careened off the road and into a canal.

Novie Caren, the 29-year-old driver, claimed that the brakes failed. Witnesses however said the truck was overspeeding. He was detained at Mati Police Station pending investigation.

The freak accident happened on June 10, 2016 at around 6 a.m. at Sitio Waywayan, Barangay Taguibo, City of Mati.
