Rody Duterte: 'I am running for President' [+video]

Davao City mayor Rody Duterte has finally decided to run for president in 2016. He made the announcement in Cavite on Saturday, November 21.

The 70-year-old local chief executive confirmed his decision to seek the presidency in an interview with media.

"Yes, I am running," he reportedly said. "There are things in life that would move a man, a citizen, to do something even if he doesn't enjoy it."

He has come upon the decision after getting disappointed that Senator Grace Poe, a frontrunner in the presidential race has not been disqualified on the grounds of her citizenship.

The Senate Electoral Tribunal decided 5-4 in favor of Poe last Tuesday.

"I am running for the president because I am so disappointed and sad over the (SET) ruling," Duterte said. The bone of contention is that Poe is not a natural-born citizen and thus not qualified to run affairs of the government as President.

"You cheapen the presidency" are the words of the feisty mayor, "you have a presumptive citizen running affairs of the government."

Saying that he is now on the "begging" stage, Mayor Digong, as he is fondly called by his constituents, is yet to talk to party leadership headed by Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III about his plans to run as President of the republic.

He has come to this decision only recently (Thursday evening) adding "Nung nakaraang gabi lang ako napasukan ng bakukang" (Some insect only entered my mind the other night).

In can be recalled that in October, just minutes before the deadline for filing of certificate of candidacy lapsed, Duterte issued a statement saying he doesn't want to run for president in next year's elections.

"A little over two years ago, I posted in the government website over the Internet that I was not interested in the Presidency," he said at the time. "Nothing has changed. I am comfortable where I am now."

However, his supporters got a glimpse of hope when Martin Diño, Duterte's partymate in Partido Demokratiko Pilipino Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), filed a COC as presidential candidate right before the closing of office hours at the Commssion on Elections (COMELEC) main office in Manila last October 16.

Ten days later, the PDP-Laban announced that it passed a resolution naming Duterte as substitute in case Diño withdraws from the presidential race.

On October 29, Diño announced his withdrawal from the 2016 polls and asked Duterte to run as his substitute. Under COMELEC rules, candidate substitution due to withdrawal is allowed until December 10, 2015.

Once it pushes through, the PDP-Laban will be fielding a Duterte-Cayetano tandem in the May 2016 polls.
