Ateneo law student gets sharp response from Sara Duterte, apologizes

A man who studied at the Ateneo de Davao University College of Law publicly apologized after getting a sharp response from Inday Sara Duterte.

Yiani Lopez Laguda, also known as Kym Lopez, blamed the lawyer and former mayor for her father Rodrigo Duterte's decision not to seek the presidency in 2016.

There were reports that Sara opposed her father's plan to run for president in next year's poll. She allegedly refused to answer phone calls and text messages from him before the press conference held Monday afternoon, October 12, at the Grand Men Seng Hotel.

In a Facebook post, just right after the hard-hitting city mayor's announcement, the disappointed supporter said:

Calling Inday Sara Duterte!

Don't be that selfish to your country most especially to the supporters of your father and don't be selfish to Mindanao. Your father is being called but you are the one hindering him to heed such calling. If others can make an ultimate sacrifice for their country for some selfish motives, why can't you when in fact your father has nothing but only for the goodness and greatness of this country."

Sara's quick response was:

Yiani Lopez Laguda. Really? Do you think a wise man and a seasoned politician will decide on the basis of my opinion. Hilom oie! [Shut up!] You don't know anything except what you read on facebook. Law student ka ba? Pagtuon sá ayaw cge ug facebook, gukda akoa grade sa bar ha [Are you a law student? Study and don't use Facebook often, go after my grade in the bar] and then maybe you can talk to me. Maybe palang na.

The reply immediately went viral as netizens bashed Laguda while expressing support for the younger Duterte on social media.

Probably feeling the pressure as well as the tongue-lashing and ridicule from the internet, Laguda posted Monday night the following "statement of apology" addressed to Sara:

In the light of what I have posted online today, I would like to apologize to Ms. Sara if I happened to hurt her feelings and offended her in one way or another because of what I have posted online. I realized it was reckless and not a prudent act for me to issue such statement. I was carried away with the situation today after her father announced that he was not finally running for the presidency. After that, while I was browsing online, I was able to read an article online pointing that the biggest factor that influenced Mayor Duterte's decision of not running for the Presidency this coming 2016 Election is Ms. Sara's non-approval of such plan. My mistake of not verifying the authenticity of such article. My deep passion of support to Mayor Duterte and in reaction to his recent declaration today that he would no longer run for President and that article that I have read prompted me to make that appeal to her online. But I think I have written my post in a bad taste.

Nevertheless, it is not a reason for me to immediately post something written in a bad taste and eventually offended Ms. Sara.

Again, my apologies to Ms. Sara Duterte. I am still hoping and praying that Mayor Duterte will make a supreme sacrifice for this country and for the Filipino people in the coming days.

Sara has not responded as of 8 a.m. Tuesday.
