DepEd: Teachers salary increase to be granted soon

Department of Education (DepEd) secretary Armin Luistro announced Tuesday that a salary increase for public school teachers nationwide will soon be granted.

Quoting budget secretary Butch Abad, he made the announcement during the Joint Grand Summit on Senior High School held July 14 in Albay.

The DepEd secretary confirmed that the Cabinet is now discussing the salary standardization of all government employees, including teachers in public schools, Manila Bulletin reported.

Luistro reportedly said what's being discussed now is how much the increase would be.

The national budget for 2016 worth P3.002-trillion has been approved by the President recently, the biggest chunk of which is for DepEd, according to the report.

Following the announcement of the wage hike, word circulated that public school teachers could be receiving P35,000 to P39,000 monthly. But according to sources, the most realistic figure for the basic pay would be P29,800.
