Blogs, netizens fall victim to hoax Star Magic Twitter account

At the height of the circulation of the latest video scandal, netizens and some blogs fell victim to a hoax Star Magic Twitter account.

Using the handle @starmagicphil, a fake Twitter page posed as ABS-CBN's talent management arm and posted a statement on July 10 refuting "rumors about Andrea Brillantes" and urging social media users to "stop spreading false information" pertaining to the 12-year-old Kapamilya star.

As of 6 p.m. today, the post got more than 5,000 retweets and was favorited over 3,000 times.

What many believed as an official statement turned out to be a deliberately fabricated falsehood.

One of the victims, showbiz and entertainment news blog Starmometer, apologized to its readers "for neglecting to check" if the quoted Twitter account was verified or not.

The fake tweet, it said, "was also quoted by the Manila Bulletin."

In a post on Tuesday, the author revealed that he "received a call from the Corporate Communications Department of ABS-CBN" informing him that "the @starmagicphil Twitter account is a hoax account."
