Asia's Next Top Model: PHL's 'runner-up curse' continues

The Philippines' "runner-up curse" in Asia's Next Top Model continues with Monika Sta. Maria being proclaimed as the season's second best.

Ayu Gani of Indonesia won the title while Monika was named 1st runner-up and Aimee Rose Cheng-Bradshaw of Singapore as 2nd runner-up.

Big prizes will be given to the winner of the show's third season or Cycle 3. Gani will drive a Subaru XV STI, appear on the cover of Bazaar magazine, become the face of TRESemmΓ© haircare, and fly to Europe for a stint with the Storm Models agency.

This is the third time that a Filipina won as runner-up on AsNTM. First on the streak was Stephanie Retuya in 2012, next was Jodilly Pendre in 2014, and Monika this year.

Despite winning several challenges and best photos, the former DLSU Lady Spiker fell short of expectation as she was heavily favored to win. The defeat sent many netizens buzzing on social media.

The Twitter hashtag #AsNTM3Finale became the top trending topic nationwide Wednesday night.
