Various reports said part of his itinerary is to visit the province of Leyte which was hardly hit by Typhoon Yolanda.

MalacaƱang welcomes the planned Papal visit next year, a Palace official said Wednesday.

“We certainly look forward to the coming of Pope Francis. We are a country with a majority population who are Catholics, and so this would be an opportunity for us to welcome His Holiness Pope Francis,” Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said at a press briefing.

“It is always a time of joy whenever the Pope comes to the Philippines. When Pope John Paul II came over, there was exuberance, and this is a moment of joy. It would be a joyous occasion, not only for Filipino Catholics, but also for the entire Philippines,” he added.

If the visit of Pope Francis pushes through, it will take place two decades after then Pope now Saint John Paul II came to the country to join the 1995 World Youth Day celebration.
