Magnitude 6.2 earthquake hits Dumaguete, some parts of Visayas (May 15, 2014)

A strong earthquake measured at Magnitude 6.2 rocked some parts of the Visayas region in the Philippines Thursday night, May 15, 2014.

Dumaguete Earthquake

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the quake occured 78 miles (125 km) West of Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental; 91 miles (147 km) South Southwest of Iloilo; 100 miles (161 km) South Southwest of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental; or 368 miles (592 km) South Southeast of Manila.

The quake was felt in the following areas, according to a tweet posted by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS):
  • Intensity V - Hinoba-an, Negros Occ.
  • Intensity IV - Iloilo City; Bago City; Pandan, Antique; Basay, Negros Occ.; Sipalay, Negros Occidental; Binalbagan, Negros Occ.; Bayawan City, Negros Or.;
  • Intensity III - Bais City; La Carlota City; Zamboanga City; Lapulapu City; Cebu City; La Castillana, Negros Occ.; Bacolod City; Dumaguete City; Jagna, Bohol; Oton, Iloilo; Tayasan, Negros Or.; Jimalalud, Negros Or.; Ayungon, Negros Or.; Sibulan, Negros Or.; Dipolog City
  • Intensity II - San Jose, Antique; Sibalom, Antique; Pagadian City
  • Intensity I - Masbate City; Kalibo, Aklan; Labason, Zamboanga del Norte; Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte; Manukan, Zamboanga del Norte
There were no immediate reports of injuries and damage to properties.
