Philippines vs Qatar game result - FIBA Asia 2013 video replay

The Philippine national team Gilas Pilipinas won against Qatar at the 2013 FIBA Asia championship at MOA Arena on Tuesday, August 6.

It was a tight first quarter with both teams getting 20 points apiece. Philippines started to pull away in the second period and even widened its lead to up to nineteen in the remaining 4:25.

Gilas Pilipinas did well on offense and defense on both ends. The Filipinos stepped up on shooting and rebound. It’s worthy to note that Gary David and Japeth Aguilar as well as Jimmy Alapag and Jeff Chan were doing a good job. The crowd got fired up everytime David takes a shot.

In the third quarter, consistency continued to play a good part for the nationals as the Qataris started to show short temper for their disappointing performance. The highest lead of the game at 22 points was reached by Gilas four minutes to go in the third period.

Life was sucked out of the MOA Arena when Marcus Douthit was hit knee-to-knee by a Qatari player. Coach Chot Reyes pulled him from the floor. Thankfully, Aguilar was playing impressively the naturalized center was given enough time to rest. Aquilar had an amazing alley-oop shot off a feed from Jayson Castro and prior slam dunks during the game.

Qatar was able to cut the lead to fifteen early in the fourth period. Douthit came back to the game which boosted Gilas’ defensive and offensive arsenal. The Qataris started to miss shots from the three-point area 7 minutes to go in the final period.

Douthit was limping and hurt, but he played with heart and didn’t give up as he grabbed the boards and added more points for the Philippines during crucial moments of the game.

Qatar did not give up easily as well. They launched a 6-0 run to cut the lead to just nine. The Filipinos responded with a defensive stance, preventing Qatar’s star player Jarvis Hayes to make perimeter shots and desperate 3-point attempts.

The Philippines hanged on as game officials made a controversial call in favor of Qatar less than a minute to go in the final period. Time was on the side of Gilas though.

It was a thrilling and huge victory for the Philippines, now with 3 and 1 win-loss record. Aguilar, who had a magnificent night, was given the Best Player of the Game honors.
