Gilas Pilipinas - FIBA Asia 2013

It wasn’t a good start for the Philippine team while the Taiwanese squad went strong in the first quarter. The visiting team relied on three-point shooting from their star players Tien Lei and Lin Chih-Chieh with Quincy Davis taking care of the boards.

Japeth Aguilar, Gabe Norwood and Jimmy Alapag launched an 8-0 run in the second period to cut the eleven point lead to just three. While some of the Taiwanese starting players are resting, the Filipinos combined offense and defense to recover the deficit and take the lead at the end of the first half.

The crowd got energized as Gilas Pilipinas started to pull away, making most shots from beyond the arc. Larry Fonacier had an explosive third quarter. He scored sixteen of his total points in that quarter alone, outscoring the entire Taiwanese team.

Early celebrations didn’t take long as Chinese Taipei rallied early in the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run as Norwood, Fonacier and Marcus Douthit were resting. Three point shots from the visitors started to sink and they were able to get closer after a 17-2 run, putting the home crowd in silence.

Philippines was able to hold on when coach Chot Reyes fielded in players who exploded in the second quarter, but Chinese Taipei’s Lu Cheng-Ju successfully fired from the 3-point area to widen their lead to 4 down two minutes in the last period. The visitors eventually won the game as lapses on defense hurt the home team.

Scores per quarter: Gilas Pilipinas vs Chinese Taipei 19-30, 43-42, 68-55, 79-84

The Filipinos gave the Taiwanese a good game but it was their three-point shooting that killed Gilas, now 2-1 in Group A. Chinese Taipei remain undefeated.
