Gilas Pilipinas - FIBA Asia 2013

The nationals started very strong and dominated the first two quarters of the game. Almost all Gilas players played well, but Gary David’s three-point shooting that brought the MOA Arena down was notable.

Philippines successfully contained Kazakh’s star point guard to just a few points. Gabe Norwood, the most defensive player of the Philippine squad, played good defense against him.

Gilas led as much as 19 points going to the second quarter, but Kazakhstan aggressively pushed their offense harder and was able to reduce it to just 11 at the closing of the first half.

Gilas kept the visiting team at bay as the Filipinos went on with offense and defense consistently. One of the highlights in the third quarter was Japeth Aguilar’s fastbreak play, a block off a Kazakh 3-point attemp and a drive for a two on the other end.

Jayson Castro William and David opened the final period with consecutive 3-point shots, after which Kazakhstan was called for back-to-back unsportsmanlike fouls. Philippines extended its lead to 28 points. Gilas had a 12-2 run and started to pull away eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

The rest of the game is history. It was a 30-point victory for the Philippines. David was explosive, scoring 22 points during the do-or-die game.

Marcus Douthit has been resting since mid-third quarter, which is favorable for the Philippines as he will get the needed energy for the Gilas semifinals game against Korea, which defeated Qatar at the final match in the quarterfinals.

Scores per quarter: Gilas Pilipinas vs Kazakhstan 32-15, 51-40, 67-49, 88-58.
