August 9, 2013 holiday declared for Eid'l Fitr

Friday, August 9, 2013 has been declared as a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eid’l Fitr or Feast of Ramadan.

Presidential Proclamation No. 629, signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. on August 1, says the declaration is necessary “to promote cultural understanding and integration” and “bring the religious and cultural significance of Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness.”

It adds, “the Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr.”

Republic Act No. 9177 declared Eid’l Fitr as a regular holiday, but the specific date is determined in accordance with the Islamic lunar calendar.
