Tahoe Plane Crash Leaves Pilot Dead, His Wife Injured

A plane crash that occured Tuesday at South Lake Tahoe left the pilot dead and his better half moderately injured, authorities had said.

CBS San Francisco was told by officials on July 23 that the small aircraft lost altitude shortly after takeoff. It then crashed and flipped into an area full of pine trees.

The pilot of the single-engine Mooney M20 was identified as 66-year-old Steven Lefton of Palo Alto, California. He reportedly died on impact while his 67-year-old wife, Karen, was rushed to the hospital due to moderate injuries.

KCRA 3 News reports in the following video that the female passenger survived after receiving aid from a nurse who was hiking nearby.


Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are working to figure out the cause of the Tahoe plane crash.
