Japan scrambles jets after China plane flies by disputed islands

Japan scrambles jets after a China military plane flies by disputed islands became a headline on news websites in the U.S. on Wednesday.

Japan scrambles jets

A report on Yahoo! News says Japan scrambled its fighter jets following alleged sightings of a Chinese Y-8 early warning aircraft flying on airspace between the main island at Okinawa prefecture and the Miyako island in southern Japan.

A Japanese official said he thinks the incident is a manifestation of China’s intent to expand its territory over the East China Sea.

“I believe this indicates China’s move toward further maritime expansion,” Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera reportedly told members of local media.

China has yet to comment on the accusation.

Waters surrounding the disputed islands are said to be rich fishing grounds, its sea floor a possible location of gas reserves and oil deposits.
