NBC News reports on July 15 that Joao de Souza was sleeping with his wife when the incident happened Wednesday.

The cow was believed to have escaped from a nearby cattle farm and was wandering before it plunched into his house situated very near a steep hillside in the city of Caratinga.

Souza, 45, was rushed to the hospital with a broken leg. Local media said the family thought at first his injuries were not life-threatening, but the victim’s brother, Carlos, had said he later died from internal bleeding. His wife and the cow were unscathed.

Carlos has put the blame not on the animal, but something else.

“Being crushed by a cow in your bed is the last way you expect to leave this earth,” he said, according to The Telegraph. “But in my view it wasn’t the cow that killed our Joao, it was the unacceptable time he spent waiting to be examined.”

Grieving, Souza’s mother also felt that the way he died was very unfair.

“I didn’t bring my son up to be killed by a falling cow. He nearly died when he was two and got meningitis, but I worked hard to buy medicines for him and he survived. And now he’s lying in his bed and gets crushed to death by a cow,” Maria de Souza told a Brazilian television station. “There’s no justice in the world.”
