American Gang-raped, allegedly, in India

An American woman was allegedly gang-raped in India early Tuesday morning. CNN reports that according to police, the purported victim accepted a ride on a vehicle with three men.

Local authorities reportedly said the incident took place around 1 a.m. on June 4.

The 31-year-old woman was on her way back to Manali, which is located in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh and a primary attraction for tourists who want to visit the Himalayas, when she took the ride.

Police said the men allegedly brought her to a remote area then raped her. A separate report said she was dumped along the highway and was found by roving patrol men.

The victim’s real identity and condition were not disclosed. She has been assigned a police escort while the investigation is ongoing, the CNN report stated.

It wasn’t clear why the tourist was out on the road near the popular backpacking destination after midnight, putting herself in harms way in a foreign land.

Netizens from the U.S. expressed online outrage over the American gang-raped incident. Many hoped that the perpetrators be immediately caught and incarcerated.
