The Sports Xchange reports via Yahoo! Sports that the iconic NBA mentor disclosed his condition to the Lakers in the middle of a 2011 second-round playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks.

Industry observers believed that Jackson did it to somehow motivate his players to conquer their own struggles, but Lakers center Paul Gasol reportedly said the disclosure was “shocking.” The team was swept out of the playoffs.

The 67-year-old coach got emotional when he told his team he had decided to delay surgery until the end of the season, the report said.

At the same time he retired as Lakers coach, Phil Jackson battled prostate cancer.
