Philippines vs Laos game result: Azkals lose in controversial match

The Philippine national football team, Azkals, suffered a defeat from Laos, 2-1, at the national stadium in Vientiane on Monday night, September 10.

Laos made its first goal at the 53rd minute on a penalty kick off a foul by Azkals defender Rob Gier, InterAKTV reports.

The report said that players of both teams got involved in a scuffle at the 66th minute — a Laos player was caught on video punching Azkal Misagh Bahadoran — delaying the match for almost 5 minutes. Bahadoran received a red card and was ejected for the rest of the game.

According to the report, Azkals goalkeeper Neil Etheridge committed a foul at the 79th minute, an opportunity which Laos successfully turned into converted penalty kick.

Rob Gier scored the lone goal for the Philippines in injury time, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit, the report said.

The Azkals played against Laos without three of its key players - Phil and James Younghusband and Jerry Lucena.

The Younghusbands returned to the country earlier to attend family matters on the occasion of their mother’s first death anniversary while Lucena was called back by his team in Europe.
