Typhoon Lawin has slightly weakened as it continues to threaten the Batanes Group of Islands, state weather bureau PAGASA reported on Thursday, September 27, 2012.
At 11am today, the eye of Lawin was spotted about 335 km East of Basco, Batanes with maximum sustained winds of 195 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 230 kph. It is forecast to move Northwest at 13 kph.
Public storm warning signal number 1 (30-60 kph winds) is up over Ilocos Norte, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra, and Isabela. Signal no. 2 (61-100 kph winds) is up over Cagayan, Calayan, and Babuyan Group of Islands, while signal no.3 (101-185 kph winds) was raised over Batanes Group of Islands.
PAGASA warned residents living in coastal areas under public storm warning signal nos. 3 and 2 to be alerted against big waves or storm surges.
Estimated amount is from 10 to 25 millimeters per hour (heavy to intense) within the 800-km diameter of Lawin, the weather agency said.
Fishing boats and other small seacrafts were also advised not to venture out into the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon, the seaboards of Southern Luzon and Visayas due to big waves generated by the typhoon and Southwest Monsoon, PAGASA added.
