PAGASA weather forecast August 16, 2012: Helen accelerates, moves away from PH

Tropical Storm Helen has accelerated further as it moves away from the country, state weather bureau PAGASA reported on Thursday, August 16, 2012.

At 4am today, PAGASA said TS Helen was spotted 290 kilometers West Northwest of Laoag City with maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph. It is forecast to move West Northwest at 24 kph.

Helen is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this afternoon, but weather experts say it will continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon bringing rains and moderate to strong winds over Luzon and Western Visayas.

PAGASA advised residents living in low lying and mountainous areas affected by the Southwest Monsoon to be alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides.
