The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers defeated the National University Bulldogs in their match at the MOA Arena on Saturday, July 28, 2012.
The Bulldogs led in most parts of the game, but the Growling Tigers applied ball pressure that forced NU to commit turnovers in the final quarter.
Jeric Teng had a season high 21 points. He exploded in the second quarter with 15 points, but the winning shot came from Jeric Fortuna at crunchtime when he followed up a missed shot down the basket.
The final score: 77-71. UST improved their team standing to 2 wins and 1 loss while NU holds a 2-2 win-loss record.
This is the second time that the Growling Tigers made an upset victory in the first round of the tournament.
Last July 19, they were able to beat the Ateneo Blue Eagles 71-70 to give the latter their first loss so far.
With that come-from-behind win, UST ended their losing streak against the 4-peat defending champions in the UAAP and it seems the lucky break has extended this week.
