Mark Barriga, the lone boxer in the Philippine contingent to the 2012 London Olympics, pummeled his opponent, Italy’s Manuel Cappai, 17-7, on Tuesday, July 31.
Reports said Barriga knocked Cappai down in the first round where the latter was given a standing eight count in the final 15 seconds. The Filipino puncher won round one, 5-2.
The second round was also given to Barriga, 4-2. He sealed the win, 8-3, in the final round of the match.
The victory gave Barriga the opportunity to advance to the final 16 of the Men’s Light Flyweight (49 kgs) division.
He is scheduled for an August 4 bout against Kazakhstan’s Birzhan Zhakypov who defeated Jeremy Beccu of France, 18-17, in the first elimination round.
