Smart Gilas vs Syria Game Result — FIBA, September 21, 2011

The Philippines' Smart Gilas defeated Syria 75-52 in the second round of the 2011 FIBA Asia basketball championship in Wuhan, China on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 (Day 7).

Smart Gilas LogoPhilippines took an early lead in the game, 14-11. Syria had its first lead 19-16 when key players focused its attack in the shaded area and converted some points on layups off defensive rebounds.

The Philippines trailed by five at the early minutes of the second quarter. The Syrians widened their lead by successfully hitting a couple of shots beyond the arc and running fastbreaks. Gilas is 0 from the three-point territory in this quarter.

Philippines started strong in the third quarter. Douthit immediately made 2 boards at the starting minutes. Although Syria traded shots, Philippines managed to cut the lead down to 4 points down 6 minutes in the third quarter.

De Ocampo sank a three-pointer to come closer by only 1. Douthit added 2 more points off the glass to take the lead back in favor of the Philippines. Since then, the nationals never looked back.

Syria committed a turnover via an 8-second violation. Philippines continued to attack the basket with Jimmy Alapag stealing the ball from the opponent twice. Lutz gunned a three in the corner seconds before the end of the 3rd period.

Early in the fourth quarter, De Ocampo slammed the ball for two coming from a missed 3-point shot from Alapag. Gilas leading by ten.

Syria appeared to have lost its way; they were stuck at 45 and went scoreless early in the 4th quarter while Philippines has 60.

Lassiter has cut through the defense of the Syrians, made 2 and 1. Syria has finally made a shot to end the six-minute dry spell, but Smart Gilas continued to show powerful basketball action up to the last minute and led by as much as 24 points in the last quarter.
