SM Pampanga Shooting Incident: Shooter is 'brain dead'

The 13-year-old boy who shot his alleged 17-year-old boyfriend before firing the caliber .22 pistol to himself in front of a restaurant chain inside SM Pampanga on September 20 was declared “brain dead,” radio and television reports on Wednesday afternoon said.

Brain death is the irreversible end of all brain activity (including involuntary activity necessary to sustain life) due to total necrosis (the premature death of cells and living tissue) of the cerebral neurons (nerve cells) following loss of brain oxygenation (lack of oxygen to the brain). Brain death is used as a legal indicator of death in many jurisdictions - Wikipedia.

Initial findings revealed that the incident was “personal in nature” and a “crime of passion” based on the suicide note found on the shooter's bag. The 13-year-old boy purportedly attempted to take his and his lover's life because of jealousy.

According to Aksyon TV which quoted an inital police report, “Jake Emerson” and “Jonathan” were spotted together at the mall. Suddenly, Jake allegedly shot Jonathan in the chest and then shot himself in the head. Both are in “critical condition.”

According to reports, authorities are currently coordinating with a third-party, whose identity was withheld pending investigation, who may have known details relative to the SM Pampanga shooting incident.

SM management has issued an official statement saying it apologizes for “whatever inconvenience or anxiety” the incident may have caused to their customers. SM added that they are fully cooperating with the authorites in the probe.
