National Chalk Holiday on September 16, 2011 declared

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) has declared a chalk holiday on Friday, September 16, 2011, to condemn the limited allowance the government gives to schools for their teaching paraphernalia, ABS-CBN reports.

ACT Vice Chairperson Benjie Valbuena reportedly said: “To underscore the demand for an increase in chalk allowance for teachers, the officers and members of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers have initiated September 16 as National Chalk Holiday.”

The teachers group has been asking for an increase in the annual chalk allowance from P700 to P2,000.

Take note that the September 16 “Chalk Holiday” is not a non-working nor an official holiday.

“We will teach our students that day but we will not use chalks to emphasize our demand,” Valbuena told the media.
