August 30 Holiday is Official

President Benigno Aquino III has issued Proclamation No. 234, which was signed last August 11 by executive secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., declaring August 30, 2011 as a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eid’l Fitr or the Feast of Ramadhan.

August 30 HolidayMalacañang noted that the proclamation was issued in line with Republic Act (RA) No. 9177 that declared Eid’l Fitr as a regular holiday throughout the country.

The President stressed that “In order to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness, it is necessary to declare Tuesday, 30 August 2011, as a regular holiday throughout the country.”

To promote cultural understanding and integration, President Aquino said the entire Filipino nation “should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr.”

Ramadhan is the month when Muslims observe a strict fast for a period of 12 hours daily, from sunrise to sunset. It is also a month of sacrifice and purification as the Muslims worldwide fast, pray and act with kindness towards the poor and less fortunate.

The Palace also declared August 29, 2011, which falls on a Monday, as a regular holiday in celebration of National Heroes Day (Araw ng mga Bayani).
