Kiefer Ravena Propels Ateneo To Win Over La Salle

Ateneo Blue Eagles rookie Kiefer Ravena has bounced back from a scoreless debut and lifted his team to beat archrival team La Salle Green Archers 81-72 in their most anticipated first game in the 74th season of the UAAP basketball tournment.

Kiefer RavenaRavena started off very well early on and took shots from almost every corner of their court. He made 14 of the whole team's 19 points in the early minutes of the first quarter.

The rookie used his fresh legs and made 22 points in the first two quarters, although he was seen catching his breath sometime in the second quarter which prompted coach Norman Black to call for substitution. Ateneo ended the first half with an 11 point-advantage, 41-30, over La Salle.

The Blue Eagles widened their lead even further using a combination of speed, proper execution of offensive plays and consistent defense. They went ahead by 19 points down 3 minutes in the 3rd quarter, their biggest lead in the game.

Ateneo was able to silence La Salle fans and supporters as it did not allow the opponent to get closer for 3 quarters. La Salle, however, launched an assault in the early minutes of the fourth.

Eighteen turnovers including 3 offensive fouls caused Ateneo's slump during the early minutes of the final quarter. La Salle was able to cut the lead to 7 points down seven minutes in 4Q, but lost the momentum when Ateneo applied pressure, bounced back and extended its lead to as much as 12 points.

It was surprising that La Salle star player Simon Atkins wasn't able to stop Ravena from inflicting damage to his team. Virtually, it was point guard LA Revilla who kept La Salle in the game.

Ravena did an amazing job inside the court, along with Salva who added 18 points as they led Ateneo to its second victory for a 2 and 0 win-loss record.

Ravena, who finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 5 steals, was declared Player of the Game.
