Azkals Battle Kuwait Sans Aly Borromeo, Stephan Shrock

The Philippine Football Team, more popularly known as Azkals, will face Kuwait in the second round, first leg of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers on July 23, Saturday (12:30 AM Sunday Philippine Standard Time), at the 22,000-seater Mohammed Al-Hamad Stadium in Kuwait.

The Azkals will be playing in the first game tonight without team captain Aly Borromeo and defender Stephan Shrock. Borromeo, an American-born Filipino, and Schrock, a Filipino-German, play defense for the team as center-back and right-back, respectively.

They both got two yellow cards in the first round and were slapped with a one-game suspension. The Asian Football Confederation granted the Philippines' appeal to allow Borromeo and Schrock to play. Unfortunately, FIFA having the final say denied AFC's decision.

Reports earlier this week said Dutch–Filipino Paul Mulders and English–Filipino Rob Gier will replace the banned footballers.

Azkals coaches Michael Weiss and Oliver Colina told reporters earlier that they are hopeful the team will be able to hold on and finish the first leg with a draw if not win it, or prevent a 4-0 loss against the tough Kuwaiti squad, so that the Philippine team will be able to pull the game at home.

After July 23, the Azkals will fly back to Manila for the second leg on Thursday, July 28, at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
