SM Arena: Home of NCAA 88, UAAP Season 75

Starting next year, the state-of-the-art SM Mall of Asia Arena - patterned after an NBA arena - will be the new home of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), a report by Manila Bulletin said.

The new SM Arena, which is expected to be completed in April 2012, has a full house capacity of 20,000 spectators, the report said, five thousand more than what Araneta Coliseum can accomodate.

National University (NU) athletic director Junel Baculi reportedly said the school plans to hold basketball games at the SM Arena.

“I was advised by Mr. Hans Sy that the arena will be finished by April and we plan to hold the games there,” revealed Baculi during Tuesday’s PSA Forum.

MOA and NU are owned by the family of Sy. NU will be the host of UAAP Season 75 while NCAA 88 will be hosted by Letran.

Designed in the likeness of the Philips Arena in the United States which is the home of the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA, the SM Area was built to host international sports and entertainment events, the MB report said. SM Arena features high-tech score boards, retractable goals, press rooms and escalators.
