Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista wins IBF Int'l featherweight title via TKO

Filipino fighter Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista defeated Heriberto Ruiz with a vengeance and won the IBF International featherweight title via a technical knock out (TKO) in their boxing match on ABS-CBN Sports' "Pinoy Pride" show last Saturday at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu.

The ring physician, Dr. Jose Unabia, recommended the stoppage of the fight due to headbutts, which the two boxers experienced not only once or twice but three times. The head clashes gave Boom Boom three cuts before the fight was stopped at 56 seconds remaining in the seventh round of the match.

Per IBF rules, the final result should be based on the scorecards because it halted at the 7th round. Boom Boom won via unanimous decision by the judges. Bruce McTavish scored it 69-65, Muhamad Rois at 68-65 and Rey Danseco scored the bout 68-65, all in favor of the Filipino champ.

For a brief background: Boom Boom suffered a heartbreaking loss from the hands of the 33-year-old Ruiz during their first meeting on November 22, 2008 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

At the time, the Filipino boxer explained that he lost due to a hand injury, but promised to defeat the Mexican fighter in their next face-off, which he did over the weekend.
