1456 Public Emergency Text Number — Philippines’ Official Information and Advisory System

The Philippine government on Friday announced that it has forged a partnership with three leading telecommunication service providers namely Smart (PLDT), Globe, and Sun (Digitel) to send free public safety text messages from 1456 to their subcribers during calamities, disasters and emergencies.

The 1456 public emergency number will prevent panic brought by “hoax messages” like the “radiation to hit Philippines” text that spread like wildfire days after the March 11 Japan earthquake and tsunami twin disaster, but turned-out to be fake.

In coordination with government agencies concerned, Malacañang’s official website reported that telcos will provide their subscribers accurate and timely advisories and notices of impending disasters and calamities.

During typhoons, floods, earthquakes, tsunami, other calamities and disasters, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) also provided Hotline numbers 911-1406; 912-2665; and 912-5668 which the public can contact at any given time.

The telcos, meanwhile, reportedly said that the official information and advisory system is free from infiltration of hackers.

Pre-paid and post-paid subscribers of Smart, Globe and Sun will receive the government's official text advisories.
