Merceditas Gutierrez urged to go on leave

A Catholic bishop on Tuesday urged the Ombudsman to go on leave, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website reported. "Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez must take a leave of absence once the impeachment trial against her starts," said Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iniguez.

The prelate who heads the Committee on Public Affairs of the CBCP said stepping down provisionally is the prudent thing to do for Gutierrez while her case is being heard in Congress.

Ombusman Merceditas GutierrezThe House of Representatives Committee on Justice earlier that day indicted Gutierrez for two impeachment charges.

The justice panel ruled that there is probable cause for the impeachment of Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez for her alleged culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust.

The impeachment complaints against the Ombudsman are expected to be sent to the plenary next Tuesday for approval.

On same day, the Supreme Court junked Gutierrez’s motion for reconsideration in connection with the impeachment complaints she is facing.

“If you are on trial, especially if you are in such a position, there’s a need for delicadeza, that you at least offer your leave of absence,” Iniguez reportedly said.

The bishop added that he hopes the impeachment process would be treated fairly.
