Earthquake hits Manila, magnitude 5.7 in Mindoro

A 5.7-magnitude tectonic quake struck off the coast of Mindoro at 6:37 Monday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed. PHIVOLCS director Renato Solidum said the epicenter was measured to be 12 kilometers northeast of Lubang Island.

Intensity 4 was felt in the cities of Manila, Marikina, Talisay, Batangas and Tagaytay while Quezon City, Alabang, Makati, Taguig, Malabon, Bacoor, Cavite were shaken with an Intensity 3; Lucban, Quezon; Plaridel, Bulacan; Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija; Baguio City felt an Intensity 2.

Solidum, who said that the quake was caused by the movement of the Manila Trench, has urged the public for calm. He said there's no reason to panic because it wasn't extraordinary.

“Hindi pa ito masyadong malakas kasi magnitude 5.7-5.8; ang dapat paghandaan malapit sa magnitude 7,” he said in a televised report.

No tsunami warning was issued. “Wala pong threat ng tsunami masyado ng malalim yung lindol,” Solidum said.
