China postpones execution of Filipinos in death row

Vice president Jojo Binay, who leads a high-profile delegation sent by the Philippine government to Beijing to make an appeal for clemency for three Filipinos convicted of drug trafficking, on Friday evening announced that China has agreed to defer the execution.

VP BinayThree Filipinos are scheduled for execution by lethal injection on Monday and Tuesday next week.

The postponement has since been labeled by government and media as “an unprecedented diplomatic triumph.”

The vice president said that the decision of the Chinese Supreme People’s Court to postpone the executions is “within the scope of Chinese law.”
