Smart to Launch Wimax Service next week

After the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) granted them more frequencies for wireless broadband service, Smart Communications Inc. is set to launch Wimax service in the Philippines.
We will have an initial launch of WiMax by next week. We have enough frequency for the moment to launch the service,
said Smart chief wireless advisor Orlando Vea in an interview with the Inquirer.

WiMax is Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. According to Wikipedia:
WiMax is a telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes, from point-to-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. WimaxThe technology provides up to 10 Mbit/s broadband speed without the need for cables.
Wimax can be used as:
  • Wi-Fi hotspot internet connection.
  • Wireless alternative to cable and DSL for long distance broadband access.
  • Data and telecommunications services provider.
  • Mobile internet access provider.
The prompt approval of the NTC of this request is indispensible for SBI to successfully offer WiMax services especially where alternative DSL (digital subscriber line) solutions are either not available or not economically viable to deploy. Thus, Internet access shall become accessible not only in urban areas, but more importantly, in rural areas because WiMax provides wireless data over long distances,
Smart's approved application filed with the NTC stated.

With Smart's Wimax service, subscribers will have the opportunity to avail wireless broadband with speeds of up to 10 mbps.
