Bagyong Vinta PAGASA Update (December 21, 2017)

Bagyong Vinta 2017 has intensified into a Tropical Storm, weather bureau PAGASA announced on its bulletin update on Thursday, December 21.

At 5PM today, forecasters said it has intensified further as it threatens Caraga area.

The eye of Bagyong Vinta was spotted 200 kilometers East of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, packing maximum sustained winds of 80 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 110 kph. It is moving West at 21 kph.

Forecast Positions:
  • 24 Hour(Tomorrow afternoon): 75 km Northwest of El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental
  • 48 Hour(Saturday afternoon):165 km South of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan
  • 72 Hour(Sunday afternoon): 435 km West of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan (OUTSIDE PAR)
  • 96 Hour(Monday afternoon):1,005 km West of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan (OUTSIDE PAR)

Tropical storm warning signal number 2 (61-120kph expected in 24 hrs) was hoisted over Surigao del Norte including Siargao Islands, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Northern Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, and Lanao del Sur

Impacts of the wind according to PAGASA:

  • Light to Moderate damage to high risk structures;
  • Very light to light damage to medium-risk structures;
  • No damage to very light damage to low risk structures
  • Unshielded, old dilapidated schoolhouses, makeshift shanties, and other structures of light materials are partially damaged or unroofed.
  • A number of nipa and cogon houses may be partially or totally unroofed.
  • Some old galvanized iron (G.I.) roofs may be peeled or blown off.
  • Some wooden, old electric posts are tilted or downed.
  • Some damage to poorly constructed signs/billboards
  • In general, the winds may bring light to moderate damage to the exposed communities. Most banana plants, a few mango trees, ipil-ipil and similar types of trees are downed or broken
  • Some coconut trees may be tilted with few others broken
  • Rice and corn may be adversely affected
  • Considerable damage to shrubbery and trees with some heavy-foliaged trees blown down.

Meanwhile, signal number 1 (30-60kph expected in 36 hrs) was raised in Southern Leyte, southern portion of Leyte, Southern Cebu, Siquijor, Bohol, Southern Negros Occidental and Southern Negros Oriental in the Visayas region, and Dinagat Island, Misamis Occidental, North Cotabato, Maguindanao, Rest of Davao Oriental, Northern Davao del Sur, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Zamboanga del Norte in Mindanao.

Impacts of the wind:
  • Very light or no damage to high risk structures,
  • Light damage to medium to low risk structures
  • Slight damage to some houses of very light materials or makeshift structures in exposed communities. Some banana plants are tilted, a few downed and leaves are generally damaged
  • Twigs of small trees may be broken.
  • Rice crops, however, may suffer significant damage when it is in its flowering stage.
