Sinulog Festival in Cebu scrapped? Mayor Osmeña clarifies issue

Has the Sinulog Festival in Cebu been scrapped? City Mayor Tommy Osmeña made a clarification amid issues surrounding the annual celebration.

"Clarification (since media again decides to publish what I'm doing, but not why): I AM NOT CANCELING THE SINULOG. What is being cancelled is the Sinulog sa Kabataan.

I just don't want our public schools spending millions of pesos and cancelling a up to week of classes just to practice. This pattern has been getting worse and worse through the years. Our priority should be education.

As for the Sinulog itself, it's time people stopped using our festival as an excuse to get drunk, or worse, high on drugs. The crowds are getting worse and worse every year. It hurts our tourism, our reputation, and it destroys the Sinulog's intent of honoring our Sto. Niño.

I am making this announcement early so people know what to expect. This is obviously not helping me politically, but that's not my goal. I am not a showbiz mayor.

I am already on the plane waiting to take off. If you have a question, I will continue to answer until I have to turn of my phone. I will also check again after I land and find (free) wifi. Mahal ang roaming."

Osmeña made the announcement that he wants the Sinulog sa Kabataan in 2017 cancelled and public schools barred from sending contingents to the Sinulog Grand Parade on Thursday, August 4, prior to his flight for the US for his yearly medical checkup.

According to a SunStar report, the Sinulog sa Kabataan is held the weekend before the Solemn Procession and Grand Parade, and is exclusively participated by public schools in Cebu City and Cebu Province. The winning contingents qualify for the Grand Parade during the Sinulog Festival.

Because there will be fewer contingents, the Grand Parade next year will be shorter and out-of-town participants would have a greater chance of winning.

Since the event will end early, there will no longer be fireworks display at the Cebu City Sports Center. However, Osmeña clarified that the fireworks display will happen at the Cebu Business Park and malls.

Are you in favor of the city mayor's decision? Do you think it will be beneficial for the people and visitors of Cebu?
