Eid’l Fitr: July 6, 2016 non-working holiday declared by Duterte

President Rodrigo Duterte has declared Wednesday, July 6, 2016 a nationwide non-working holiday for Eid'l Fitr, a Palace official said.

Presidential Spokesperson Ernie Abella made the announcement on Monday, two days before the feast which marks the end of the holy Islamic month of Ramadan.

Muslims celebrate Eid'l Fitr with prayers and gatherings as a thanksgiving to Allah following a month-long period of fasting.

Republic Act 9177 declared Eid'l Fitr as a regular holiday throughout the country to give Filipinos the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in peace and harmony.

Declaring July 6, 2016 a non-working holiday is necessary in order to bring the religious and cultural significance of Eid'l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness.

Abella said the declaration has already been signed by the President and is set to be released within the day.
