Memo orders ban on motorcycles, bicycles in Baguio

Aside from tricycles, scooters, motorcycles and bicycles are now banned in Baguio City, according to a new memo issued by the city mayor.

Memorandum Order No. 038-2016 dated February 4, 2016, which was signed by Honorable Mauricio Domogan, directs the Baguio City Police Office traffic management bureau to implement Ordinance No. 28, Series of 2012 and other related ordinances.

Motoring magazine Top Gear Philippines reported that a 1965 ordinance already prohibited bicycles to enter Session Road.

According to an environmental advocate, the new one covers the entire vicinity of the central business district including Harrison, Abanao, Legarda, Magsaysay, Bonifacio, and other roads.

A copy of the memo circulated on Facebook as it raised concerns among motorists, riders and environmental advocacy groups.

The local government is expected to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
