66-year-old man accused of statutory rape arrested

Arrested on Tuesday, January 12 at Pagawan, Misamis Oriental was a 66-year-old man who allegedly raped his wife's niece in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

The man, who was identified as Artemio Belecario, went to hide in Pagawan where a relative lives.

He now faces four counts of act of lasciviousness and statutory rape at the sala of Judge Jose Bayani Usman of Regional Trial Court Branch 50. He denied all the allegations against him, though.

Senior Insp. Enrique Belaca-ol, the chief police officer of Barangay Pagawan, said that the suspect is now detained temporarily at the office of the police's Regional Intelligence Unit in Northern Mindanao and will be turned over to Puerto Princesa soon.

Rape is an inherent violent crime that results in physical, emotional, social and psychological harm. Whether force is used in the crime or not, the mere fact that the sexual act is committed against the will of the victim already makes it violent.

No information about the child's age has been revealed yet. In pursuant to the Revised Penal Code 2012, the perpetrator's criminal liability nevertheless remains.

Belecario has yet to prove his innocence in court but could not post bail.

“The case of Belicario is non-bailable,” Belaca-ol said.
