How the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) crisis started

The so-called Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) crisis did not happen overnight, or hours after a video of Tenny and Angel Manalo surfaced online.

It apparently began in May this year when a blog titled "Iglesia Ni Cristo – Silent No More" was created by an alias Antonio Ebangelista (AE) purposely to make public the sentiments of the family of the late Eraño "Ka Erdy" Manalo, who served as INC's second Executive Minister from 1963 until 2009, except the eldest son, Eduardo, the present Executive Minister.

The blog claimed that members of Ka Erdy's family have been deprived of drivers, security personnel, and household workers. Also allegedly stripped were benefits and allowances for food, fuel, and other things valuable for them and their children.

According to AE, those who tried to help the family were expelled from the Church.

Here's a screenshot of the enumerated allegations:

The original blog at has been shut down on Friday, July 17, after AE posted supposed exposes regarding the alleged sale of INC properties in Antipolo City.

In a newly-created blog with the same title, AE claimed that his first blog was hacked by INC's ACTIV department.

According to AE, team ACTIV or Alliance of Computer Technology and Information Volunteers is "a group of brethren whose profession, work, educational course, skill or interest is in the field of Information Technology" established in 2011 with the approval of Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo.

The "technology-related resource group," AE said, promotes "awareness on responsible use of technology specifically on the internet and social media" and is "responsible for monitoring the cyberspace for any and all negative information against the doctrines, the brethren, the Executive Minister and the church as a whole" among other functions.

A blog titled "UNMASK ANTONIO EBANGELISTA" was created by someone who uses the handle "EBANGELISTA ANTONIO" to refute AE's allegations point by point.

In spite of this and the alleged hacking, AE continued to post controversial articles including one that mentions the expulsion of some INC ministers and their family members.

In his July 18 blog post titled "The Tyranny of Injustice," AE claimed that some of his fellow INC brothers were interrogated and placed under "house arrest."

In an update on July 19, AE alleged that nine ministers were abducted and their families were "under strict orders to keep their mouths shut."

"Ministers and family members were asked to surrender their passports to the Central Office to ensure that they will not be able to leave [the] country should they decide to escape," the alleged whistleblower said.

In a post on July 21 titled "Do not Underestimate the Power of God," AE revealed that he is "in hiding" as there is a "bounty over my head" as well as "orders to kill me."

He had addressed the post and most of the previous ones to the "Sanggunian" (Council).

In his parting words, AE borrowed a quote said to be written by Greek poet Dinos Christianopoulos that says: "They tried to bury us…they didn’t know we were seeds." That was his last post.

On Wednesday evening, July 22, a video showing Angel appealing for help and Tenny saying their lives are in danger was uploaded on YouTube by a certain David Romero.

In the 1 minute, 54 second clip, Ka Erdy's widow also sought help for her daughter, Lottie, and some ministers who were allegedly abducted.

On Thursday, July 23, the INC announced during a press conference that Ka Eddie has expelled his mother and brother from the Church.

Iglesia Ni Cristo released an official statement:

An hour later, an unidentified person flashed a sign saying "tulong, hostage kami" outside the Manalo residence in Tandang Sora, Quezon City.

Police have been monitoring and so far, there's been no confirmation if a hostage situation is taking place. The INC spokesman, meanwhile, denied the claim of hostage-taking in the home of the Manalos.

At around 1 a.m. on Friday, July 24, Angel Manalo appeared at the gate of the compound for a short interview with members of media. He clarified that no abduction took place inside their house and that a child was the one who posted the messages about the alleged hostage-taking.

Ka Angel said the Sanggunian threatened them but denied they were held hostage by INC members. He expressed dismay over alleged corruption in the INC.
