The Buzz airs final episode on Easter Sunday

After almost 16 years, ABS-CBN's weekly entertainment news and talk show The Buzz aired its final episode on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015.

Asia's King of Talk, Boy Abunda, who successfully steered the multi-awarded show with the help of co-host Kris Aquino and several others in between, including Toni Gonzaga, did not disclose the real reason why they have to go off the air.

He just said the people behind the program as well as its viewers have evolved. Citing changes in the composition of the show's staff, Abunda emphasized that they have agreed to cease from airing "temporarily."

The Kapamilya network released an official statement after The Buzz aired its final episode.

"After more than 15 years of unparalleled credibility as Philippine television's leading showbiz-oriented talk show, 'The Buzz' takes a break after its April 5, 2015 episode. The program recognizes the evolution in showbiz news reporting, and to cope with it, 'The Buzz' deems it a necessary step to reinvent to start anew. Showbiz news will never die. The showbiz talk genre remains," the statement read.

"Since the program began, 'The Buzz' has gained the authority of being the premiere source of truthful and balanced entertainment news for the Filipino audience worldwide. As the program bids farewell for now, 'The Buzz' would like to thank its loyal viewers for the support they have given the show in its entire run. See you again soon," it added.

The Buzz, which featured local celebrity gossip and news, premiered in 1999.

After more than one and a half decade, is it safe to say that the show was cancelled because it was overtaken by social media and emerging online showbiz news sources? Is it the reason why The Buzz needs to be replaced by the rumored show to be hosted by the Gonzaga sisters, The Toni & Alex Talk Show?

Update: We received reliabe information that the cancellation of The Buzz was a "preemptive move" as it might go head-to-head in the timeslot with GMA's new game show to be hosted by Willie Revillame.

"Wowowin" is expected to air its pilot episode on April 26.
