China Reclamation: What The Philippines Should Do

China has been doing a reclamation of reefs in the West Philippine Sea, which is already alarming. What the Philippines should do to solve the big problem is this...

In a press conference on Monday, April 20, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. raised concerns over the latest massive reclamation by China on seven disputed areas in the West Philippine Sea.

He said the AFP received reports that Chinese coast guard have driven away Filipino fishermen near the reclamation sites.

Catapang called on China to stop its reclamation activites particularly in the Mischief (Panganiban) Reef, which is only 23 nautical miles away from Ayungin Shoal and is within the country's 200 nautical miles exclusive economic zone, based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS.

But what can the Philippines do if a super power bully like China doesn't want to listen?

The Philippines, having one of the weakest militaries in Asia, already brought the case to the international arbitration court, but a ruling is yet to be issued, hopefully, in 2016. By then, China is already done with its reclamation activities.

According to ABS-CBN News, the Kagitingan Reef in the Spratly Islands was little more than a reef when China began land reclamation works to turn it into an island late last year. Recently, satellite images from DigitalGlobe shown on the website of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) reportedly show the runway more than one-third complete.

To stop China from claiming these areas and for the Philippines to be able to defend its territories in case an armed conflict between the two countries arises, the Philippines should give up its independence and become part of the United States.

Two years ago, YouTube sensation Travis Kraft talked to average people to find out what they think about the proposal. Here's feedback from ordinary Filipinos:
