Brownout in Mindanao during Pacquiao-Mayweather fight feared

Some areas in Mindanao are feared to experience a brownout on May 3, the day of the megafight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

According to a report aired on various ABS-CBN newscasts, the Department of Energy (DoE) has ensured the public that there will be no blackouts in Luzon and Visayas on that day.

"The entire country should be able to watch Pacquiao defeat Mayweather," energy secretary Jericho Petilla said.

"NGCP recognizes the importance of this event, and shall endeavor to keep all transmission functions normal on May 3, so that all available capacity may be efficiently transmitted to its load customers," a statement from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines reads.

However, brownouts in some Mindanao areas are possible due to a shortage in the supply of electricity.

The cooperatives mentioned in the report include those in Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga City, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Agusan del Sur, and Surigao del Sur as follows:
  • Zamsureco 1
  • Zamsureco 2
  • Zamcelco
  • Cotelco
  • Sukelco
  • Aselco
  • Surseco 1
Expectedly, more or less 700,000 costumers will be affected by the brownout to last 30 minutes to 4 hours.

This is because the aforementioned cooperatives are dependent on a hydropower plant, the power-generating capacity of which dropped due to limited water supply, the DOE explained.
