Japanese police said the incident took place at an apartment in Tokyo’s Katsushika Ward at around 12:30 a.m. on April 9, NTV reported.

The identities of both were not disclosed and the mother was only identified as a woman in her 30's.

The mother, who admitted to investigators that she was drunk at the time, said she was holding her daughter in her arms while they were taking a bath when she passed out.

When she woke up, the mom said she noticed that her child was already on the bottom of the bathtub, unconscious. She then called 119 to seek help.

Police said the baby had a cardio-respiratory arrest and was confirmed dead at the hospital.

After the story was published on news website Japan Today, the mother earned criticisms from readers, a few of whom wondered why she took her baby in the bathroom with her at midnight.

Some called on the authorities to charge the woman for negligence that led to her daughter's death.
