Just ten days before Christmas, a fire broke at the slaughterhouse block Monday afternoon in the City of Mati, province of Davao Oriental.
Several residential houses and business establishments quickly turned into ashes despite efforts of firefighters and volunteers to battle the blaze that occured along Quezon Street.
Just across Citi Hardware and Moding's Bakery and a few blocks away from the San Nicolas De Tolentino cathedral as well as the newly-opened Mandarin Restaurant at the Baywalk park, the place is home to Macum Printing Press, Ticklers nightclub, some eateries, and the decades old slaughterhouse.
A mix of gray and white smoke can be seen billowing from the site as the fire spread rapidly, helped by strong wind coming from the east.
Authorities said the extent of damage to property is being assessed while the cause of fire is under investigation. There has been no report of casualties or injured residents.
The fire victims have been taken to an evacuation center provided by the city government.
