Gil, whose real name is Raphael Joseph De Mesa Eigenmann, was rumored to have suffered from liver cancer but his children denied it, reports ABS-CBN News.

The actor's manager, June Rufino, confirmed the sad news to major media outlets.

He said the family is asking for privacy at this time and will issue an official statement about the actor's death within the day.

“As of now, the family is in deep grieving and they want private time with him,” Rufino reportedly said in a statement.

He added that the actor's loved ones are also asking for prayers so they could overcome their ordeal.

Yahoo! Celebrity Philippines reports that Gil died at his sister Cherie Gil's condominium unit in Ortigas. His wife, Maricar Jacinto, and son Gabby were beside him when he passed away.

The actor has been cremated at the Heritage Memorial Park in Taguig and a one-day ceremony is being planned in La Salle Greenhills, Ortigas, the report says.

Cirrhosis is a result of advanced liver disease, according to a Wikipedia entry. It is "most commonly caused by alcoholism, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and fatty liver disease, but has many other possible causes."
