Priest humiliates unwed mother at her baby's baptism (video)

Catholic priest Father Romeo Obach has humiliated a 17-year-old unwed mother at the baptism of her baby in Cebu last Sunday, July 6.

Priest berates unwed mother at her baby's baptism

The child's grandmother, Jieve Daitol Frias, uploaded a video showing Fr. Obach of the Sacred Heart Chaplaincy in Eversely Child Sanitarium giving her daughter a sermon, reports ABS-CBN News.

In the video, the priest asked if the single mother is not ashamed to have a baby born out of wedlock. While the child had not sinned, he said, the mother did because she slept with a man who was not her husband. He then warned the teen mom that the consequences of her actions may be passed on to the child.

In a Facebook post, Frias expressed her disappointment saying they went to the church to have her granchild baptised and not to have her daughter humiliated.

Social media users criticised the priest saying he doesn't have any right to judge and insult the unwed mother, with some noting that even Pope Francis baptised a child of an unmarried couple in January this year.

On Tuesday, Father Obach apologized to the single mother just as the mainstream media started to pick the controversial story up after the video had gone viral online.

In a letter, the priest said:

I am now making a heartfelt apology to the mother of the child and her immediate family. I deeply regret that I have done this. I only realized how cruel my ways to educate and impart lessons for the event. I am deeply sorry and I humbly ask for your forgiveness.

He was reportedly barred from celebrating Mass and other religious activities pending investigation.

In an interview, the unwed mother admitted that she was deeply hurt and finds it difficult to forgive the priest as of yet considering that he berated her infront of many people.
