Subsidy for students under GASTPE up

The subsidy for students covered by the Government Assistance for Students and Teachers in Private Education (GASTPE) has increased.

The Department of Education announced Wednesday that the P1,000-hike is applicable for students in participating private schools outside Metro Manila.

Effective school year (SY) 2014-2015, the subsidy for each student-beneficiary is P7,500 per year, which is a little over 15 percent more than the P6,500 granted in previous years.

“Our mandate is to provide every Filipino child with access to quality education. The decision to increase the tuition subsidy under the Education Service Contracting (ESC) is part of our continuing thrust to democratize access to quality education across the country,” education secretary Armin Luistro said.

Jointly implemented by DepEd and the Fund for Assistance to Private Education (FAPE), the ESC is a scheme under the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education (GASTPE) wherein the government subsidizes the tuition fee of students who would enroll in private high schools.

The education department did not only increase the amount, it also added slots so that more students can avail the program. From more than 800,000 beneficiaries last year, almost one million students in Grades 7 to 10 are now covered by the ESC.

“ESC is a demonstration of the government’s commitment to maintain the viability of private education as a key partner in the delivery of quality basic education to the Filipino learners,” Luistro said, adding that DepEd recognizes the complementary role of private schools in delivering education to the Filipinos.
